how is it going... ? i know it's your dad. hope all is well. beach- Thanks for the note, Beach. He should be out by 4 am or so. We just spoke with the nurse in charge of the O.R., and he said it's common for this procedure to take a long, long time. They have the surgeons and staff rotating in. Quite an undertaking. But so far everything looks like it's going according to plan. erikschmidt
- wow. what is the procedure? if you don't mind me asking. such an ordeal. beach
- It's removing a cancer in his throat. Round two with this thing. He knocked it down a couple of years ago using chemo and radiation, but now it's back. The real question is how much of his tongue will be left when all is said and done. Doesn't seem like a big deal until you realize just how handy eating and talking are.
They're doing a lot of removing, transplanting tissue, and grafting skin to make it all happen. Had I known it would take this long, I'd have come this evening rather than earlier in the day. But somehow I feel a bit better knowing that I've gone through some discomfort. Perhaps it's my desire to share some small amount of the pain in sympathy with him. erikschmidt

1) You get up very early in the morning
2) Thanks for the good vibes. Dad got wheeled over to the ICU at around 6 am, but they were actually done with the surgery part at around 4 am, making it 20 hours in the operating room. We're still waiting for the debrief from the lead surgeon, but so far it sounds like it just took a helluva long time because it was complicated work. erikschmidt
