Hello Veronica, and welcome to 12seconds!
There is scientific proof prewing in the Santa Cruz laboratiories that 12 seconds is 1/5 of a minute. A plethora of other reasons exist, but they're just circumstancial.

The real reason it's 12 seconds is because in ancient Greek mythology there were 12 Olympians, the 12 principal Greek gods. You know, Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, etc. Speaking of which, we should read Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a series by Rick Riordan for S&L - those books are sweet.
